Have you ever heard the expression, “The straw that broke the camel’s back?” #-ad_banner-#It describes the point when a small or ordinary event causes a disproportionate result. Malcolm Gladwell calls it the “tipping point” in his famous book of the same name. You see, most of us like to think change happens slowly, that only time and strenuous labor make big things happen. But a new development from Apple has quietly set the stage for a potential $11 trillion market to come flooding into the pockets of a few… Read More

But a new development from Apple has quietly set the stage for a potential $11 trillion market to come flooding into the pockets of a few lucky credit card companies — and it could begin as soon as 2017. Once considered too remote to be tapped, this huge market is just waiting to break open under the weight of Apple’s recent move. In a previous StreetAuthority.com article, we talked about Apple Pay, which enables consumers to buy goods with a simple tap of their phone. We detailed how near field communication (NFC) chips now allow smartphones and cash registers to communicate, making cash and credit cards obsolete. In fact, just last year I predicted this shift in my… Read More

The other day, I had an idea for a product. This happens to me fairly often, and the outcome is always the same: I look online and, lo and behold, someone else has already come up with it. So after I got tired of this idea rattling around my brainpan, I Googled it. #-ad_banner-#I found nothing. So I decided to allow the idea to marinate a little. While I was driving to church the following Sunday, I had an inspiration. Not only did I have an idea for the product, I now thought I… Read More

So after I got tired of this idea rattling around my brainpan, I Googled it. #-ad_banner-#I found nothing. So I decided to allow the idea to marinate a little. While I was driving to church the following Sunday, I had an inspiration. Not only did I have an idea for the product, I now thought I knew how to make it work. So after lunch, I stopped by a couple of stores and bought four ingredients. I went home and mixed them together in my garage. The result worked exactly as I had thought it would. I had a product. Something new. With a big market, I might add. I built a spreadsheet to estimate costs. I went online and looked at potential packaging material and machines. I even started looking at used manufacturing equipment to mix the ingredients and fill the tubular plastic packages… Read More

Talk about a lousy way to start the day. #-ad_banner-#Each morning, even when he’s on vacation, the President of the United States sits with top intelligence officials, usually in the Oval Office, to review the President’s Daily Brief. This is a classified document that lists potential threats against the United States. This is a classified document that lists potential threats against the United States. It contains the latest in intercepted communications, satellite imagery, human intelligence and analysis from the nation’s top security agencies. If you wonder what’s been turning Obama’s hair gray — or what did it to Bush and Clinton — it’s this nettlesome little report. Being the leader of the free world has its perks, but this isn’t one of them. Most of the threats against national security detailed in this report are handled by the government. However, in order to address the country’s top threat, which I will talk more about in a minute, the government will need to rely on a burgeoning industry that investors can capitalize on today. The president receives this information as Washington begins its day. Over on C Street, just west of John Marshall Park, the staffers at… Read More

It was December 17th, 1938. Two scientists, Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassman, did what all scientists hope to do: They made a discovery that changed the course of the world forever. #-ad_banner-#Hahn, a chemist, accomplished something he thought to be impossible — and later won a Nobel Prize for his work. The now celebrated “radium-barium-mesothorium-fractionation” succeeded in splitting the atom and gave birth to nuclear fission. The now celebrated “radium-barium-mesothorium-fractionation” succeeded in splitting the atom and gave birth to nuclear fission. Together, the two scientists laid the foundation for the advancement of nuclear energy. Today, nuclear energy accounts for nearly 20% of the total energy production in the United States. Although we hear so much on the news about solar and wind power, other forms of alternative energy aren’t making headlines. But that could soon be changing… Like the birth of nuclear fission in 1938, the world might be on the cusp of another game-changing discovery. You may not have heard about this, but key developments in nuclear fusion were recently announced by aerospace and defense contractor Lockheed Martin’s (NYSE: LMT) highly-regarded Skunk Works division. Word of this advancement came in mid-October, when… Read More

Today’s essay is a little personal for me. The opportunity I’m about to tell you about stems from a condition I suffer from, along with millions of other Americans. But as I’ll explain in a moment, there are several companies quietly working on game-changing treatments that could not only offer relief — but also a windfall of profits to investors. If you don’t take care of yourself, they keep telling me, you can’t take care of anyone else. #-ad_banner-#And lately, I’ve been thinking about my own personal medical condition, diabetes mellitus, also commonly referred to as “Type I,” “insulin-dependent” or… Read More

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder characterized by a malfunctioning pancreas. All food turns into sugar through digestion, but diabetics are unable to absorb the sugar the body needs to feed itself. Insulin, a hormone secreted by the pancreas’ beta cells, helps usher glucose through the cell’s semi-permeable membrane. Without insulin, sugar builds up in the bloodstream, causing a condition called hyperglycemia. Too much insulin (or not enough sugar) and the blood sugar goes too low, which is known as hypoglycemia. Type I diabetics must carefully monitor their carbohydrate intake and inject insulin to keep their blood sugar in… Read More

Mark Twain understood the mind of an investor. The world-renowned author once proclaimed: “A dollar picked up in the road is more satisfaction to us than the 99 which we had to work for, and the money won in the stock market snuggles into our hearts in the same way.” #-ad_banner-#Twain acknowledged the rush that can accompany earning money without any labor. He understood that the human brain is not wired for clear thinking in regard to money. That’s because the area of the brain that responds to financial reward is the same part that lights up from cocaine. This… Read More

He understood that the human brain is not wired for clear thinking in regard to money. That’s because the area of the brain that responds to financial reward is the same part that lights up from cocaine. This presents a major problem. Investors become insatiable, searching high and low for the next “big winners.” What they’re really interested in is a get-rich-quick scheme. That’s a terrific way to lose money — and quickly. However, if you are a regular reader of my Game-Changing Stocks newsletter, then you know that I have been making the habit of finding stocks with the most “big winner” potential into a science for a while. Take electric car maker Tesla (Nasdaq: TSLA) for example. On Dec. 20, 2010, I first profiled and recommended the company to my readers. Since then, it has become… Read More

Do you want to become a millionaire? That’s obviously a rhetorical question… the majority of us would love it. But what’s your plan for achieving that goal? #-ad_banner-#If your plan is to make that sort of wealth in the stock market, what’s your strategy? Blue-chip stocks, index funds, or are you an income investor who wants to watch their dividend “paychecks” (as my colleague Amy Calistri would say) roll in by the truckload? All of those strategies are great. There’s nothing wrong with them, and they’ll probably make you money in the long run. But I doubt they’ll make you… Read More

All of those strategies are great. There’s nothing wrong with them, and they’ll probably make you money in the long run. But I doubt they’ll make you a millionaire… at least in time for you to enjoy it. They’re not going to give you those “knocked out of the park” returns that you’ve heard about since you first learned of the stock market. No, I’m convinced that if your goal is to reach a seven-figure bank account, you need to follow something I like to call the “20% solution.” The idea behind it is simple. If your goal is to become a millionaire in the market, then you need to dedicate a portion of your portfolio to swing for the fences. Let me explain… My… Read More

It’s hard to watch when one of America’s great 20th century success stories falls on hard times.  #-ad_banner-#It’s even harder to watch when the company’s struggles are simply the result of a complete disregard for its history, its primary demographics, and its place among competitors in the business. Sometimes, that’s all it takes.  As I’ll show you in today’s essay, this one simple change can lead to a refocus on the tried-and-true principles that led to a company’s success in the first place. And once things get back on track, it can often lead to big profits for companies and shareholders alike. I’ve got my eye on one left-for-dead American company that’s poised to do just that… And the changes it’s making today could lead shares to bounce back in a major way in 2015.
